Cale Wilson has a look this week at Coaches that are on the hot seat.
1.Jim Harbaugh (Michigan) When Michigan hired the former 49ers coach, the college football world went nuts. Michigan fans went berserk and finally thought their beloved Wolverines would start competing for national titles. His first year of his tenure was a great start with an 11-3 record and an appearance in the Orange Bowl. But ever since then, Harbaugh has not lived up to expectations. Ever since he was hired, Jim is 1-6 at home vs rivals Michigan State and Ohio State. So far in 2020, Harbaugh has had the worst season of his tenure in Ann Arbor with a 2-4 record in his first 6 games of the season. The worst loss being to 1-5 Penn State. Safe to say that things are heating up in Ann Arbor.
2. Clay Helton (USC) To some USC fans, a 3-0 start has been the worst outcome possible. There is a portion of the fanbase that has been rooting for short-term failure on social media so they can secure a spot for Urban Meyer. Urban works just a few miles down the road at FOX Sports. Helton continues to produce in the clutch when his job is in security. After a horrific performance against Iowa in the Holiday Bowl last season, USC has won their first 3 games of the season with the first two being in the final seconds. Helton has gotten votes of confidence from his ADs at the end of his last two seasons. This is one of the most complicated hot seat situations in the nation. Helton could win the Trojans a PAC-12 title game but with a snap of Urban Meyer’s fingers, a coach who has a better win percentage than Dan Mullen at Florida and Harbaugh could be gone.
3. Randy Edsall (UCONN) In the world of the hot seat, the best thing that UCONN could do was not play football this year. Since 2017, Edsall has a 6-30 record with the Huskies.
4. Les Miles (Kansas) Despite an 0-8 record, things are not too dreary in Lawrence. Basketball season is starting. But it’s bad in football. Really bad. The Jayhawks defense has given up the second most points in the country (339) and there are QB Problems. Miles is 3-15 at KU in the Big 12 that looks like it gets more competitive every year. While he won’t get fired, the ones writing the checks are becoming restless. This was athletic director Jeff Long’s hire. He will trust the process as long as he can but fans don’t want to be reminded this is a 4-5 year process.
5. Tom Herman (Texas) Herman is currently holding steady at UT right now. After losing to TCU and Oklahoma, the walls were closing in on him. Then the longhorns won 3 straight including a road win over #6 Oklahoma State on Halloween. That win streak came to an end last week as the longhorns fell to Iowa State 23-20. Ultimately ending Texas’ chances of making the Big 12 title game. Texas has an opportunity to finish strong with their last two games being against Kansas State and Kansas.
