He’s starting his new job...short-handed. Interim Gamecocks head coach Mike Bobo gets his first test Saturday night against Missouri, but he’s already facing challenges within his own program. Yesterday, cornerback Israel Mukuamu joined fellow corner Jaycee Horn in opting out of the rest of the season to prepare for the NFL Draft. And safety RJ Roderick and reserve lineman Makius Scott also opted out, for personal or Covid-related reasons. Bobo also announced that Gamecock defensive end Aaron sterling and linebacker Brad Johnson will miss the rest of the year with injuries. The Gamecocks made moves to shore up their defensive depth, as running back ZaQuandre White worked out with the safeties yesterday and offensive lineman Jordan Rhodes is taking reps at defensive tackle. The Gamecocks are scheduled to host Mizzou Saturday night, but the Tigers are struggling with the depth...they’re down to 56 healthy scholarship players, close to the SEC minimum of 53.
